Tofu manchurain

Who is not a fan of those Manchurian from Asian cuisines ???
Well, am not an exception too. I am a crazy big fan of those vegan & healthy protein and yet flavourful.  you can have it as a side/curry with rice/naan/flatbread or even with noodles. There was a period, I would go to an Indo Chinese shop and order tofu Manchurian even without looking at the menu. Well, not anymore.
The recipe is pretty simple and I started making this delicious and yet healthy dish at home ever since I decoded the recipe.
Here it is decoded for you too.....

Ingredients :

  • Extra-firm Tofu - 7oz /200 gms pack (Only extra firm will hold its shape)
  • corn flour - 3 tbsp
  • Maida/All purpose flour - 1 tbsp
  • Chilli /Manchurian sauce - 2 tbsp
  • Sugar/Honey- 1 tbsp
  • Spring onion - 1 bunch  - cut/halved
  • Capsicum/bell pepper -1 in no  - cut into chunks - optional
  • Onion - 1 in no (small in size) - cut into chunks - optional
  • salt - as needed
  • Soy sauce - 3 tbsp
  • Grated ginger - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 3 grated/cut into small pieces

Instructions :

  • Press the tofu with tissue/clean cloth for removing the water content out of it. You can even place it between some weights/plates to remove the water content.  Once done, cut into squares
  • Mix the cornflour/maida, quarter tsp salt, and add in some water little by little. The consistency should neither be thick nor runny.
  • Meanwhile, in a pan, add oil just enough for shallow frying the tofu.
  • Coat the tofu in the corn four batter/mix completely in all sides and add them to the pan
  • Turn and fry on all sides until it becomes golden color in medium heat. Will not take more than 4-5 minutes
  • Once done, remove carefully without breaking and let it cool
  • In the remaining oil(about a tbsp oil is what needed), fry the garlic, ginger and fry for a minute.
  • Add a tsp salt, the onion, and capsicum chunks, and fry for a minute.
  • The trick here is not to cook the onion and capsicum. It just needs a saute.
  • Now add in the chili sauce, soy sauce and let it boil briefly.
  • Now it is time to add honey/sugar and give it a quick stir.
  • Add the fried tofu and garnish with spring onion.
Tadaaa. the dish is ready to serve in around 15 minutes. I like to have it some steamed rice/ fried rice.
you can vary the amount of chili sauce and soy sauce depending on how much curry you need or if you need it semi-dry.
